About

Patricia Kopatchinskaja is a Moldovan Austrian Swiss violinist who has made it her mission to drag classical music away from its comfort zone. She is famously allergic to the standard repertoire of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, preferring what she calls music "from the borders," and has backed that up with performances and recordings of works by composers like Heinz Holliger, Michael Hersch, Péter Eötvös and György Ligeti, often adding her own voice to the mix through Sprechgesang and spoken elements. She has performed as soloist with the Vienna, Berlin and London Philharmonics, toured repeatedly with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra, and served as artistic partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Camerata Bern. Her staged concert productions, such as "Dies Irae" with Lucerne Festival Alumni and "Bye Bye Beethoven" with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, blur the line between concert and theatre. The British Royal Philharmonic Society summed her up well in 2014, calling her an "irresistible force of nature: passionate, challenging and totally original."
