About

Also known as: James Enes

James Ehnes plays violin with a level of range and seriousness that puts him in a category of his own among Canadian classical musicians. He has appeared as soloist with virtually every major orchestra you can name, from the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony to the Royal Concertgebouw and London Symphony Orchestra, and he performs on a 1715 Stradivarius known as the "ex Marsick." His recordings have earned 11 Juno Awards, two Grammys, and two Gramophone Classical Music Awards, including a best concerto win for his recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto. Beyond solo work, Ehnes is artistic director of the Seattle Chamber Music Society and performs chamber music with the Ehnes Quartet alongside violinist Amy Schwartz Moretti, violist Che Yen Chen, and cellist Edward Arron. He has also taken on teaching roles, joining the Royal Academy of Music as visiting professor in 2017 and more recently joining the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music faculty as a professor of practice in violin.
