About
Renaud Capuçon once played Gluck's Melody of Orpheus on his Guarnerius in the middle of a Paris Métro crowd for a film, and nobody noticed. That violin is the 1737 "Panette" that belonged to Isaac Stern, loaned to him in 2005. He's one of France's best known classical violinists, with a discography stretching from Schubert, Brahms and Ravel chamber works to concertos by Schumann, Mendelssohn and Dutilleux, often alongside his younger brother, cellist Gautier Capuçon. He has also pushed new music forward, working with composers like Pascal Dusapin, Bruno Mantovani and Wolfgang Rihm on violin concertos. Beyond the stage, he founded a chamber festival near Chambéry in 1996, took over an Easter festival in Aix en Provence in 2013, teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music, and was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2020.
