About
Alexandre Tharaud has a habit that says a lot about him: before every recording session, he lays flowers at the grave of Emmanuel Chabrier at Montparnasse Cemetery. That kind of devotion to the repertoire runs through everything the French pianist does. Based in Paris, Tharaud has built a career spanning Europe, North America and Japan, with a discography that roams widely across Bach, Schubert, Rameau, Ravel, Couperin and contemporary composers like Thierry Pécou, whose piano concerto he premiered at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées in 2006. The New York Times once praised his Bach playing as "crisply articulated and vividly etched", which captures his approach well. He famously refuses to keep a piano at home, believing easy access would lead to noodling rather than rigorous preparation. He appeared as himself in Michael Haneke's award winning film Amour in 2012, and has also put his thoughts on paper, publishing two books about the musician's life. Recent releases on Erato include a Satie disc featuring 27 newly discovered works, and a concertos album pairing pieces by Ramon Lazkano, Thierry Pécou and Alex Nante.
