When The New York Times called Víkingur Ólafsson "Iceland's Glenn Gould" after his 2017 Philip Glass Piano Works album, the label stuck for good reason. The Reykjavík born pianist plays with what Le Monde described as "volcanic temperament, great virtuosity, taste for challenges", and his recordings on Deutsche Grammophon have earned him some of the most coveted prizes in classical music, including the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations and the 2025 Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal. His catalogue ranges from Philip Glass and Debussy to Rameau and Mozart, but Bach keeps pulling him back. In 2023 he embarked on a world tour playing the Goldberg Variations 88 times, a single work, nothing else. He has also championed Icelandic composers, premiering six piano concertos by the likes of Daníel Bjarnason and Haukur Tómasson, and collaborated with Björk on Icelandic television. He performs regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among many others.
