Few pianists alive have built a reputation as formidable as András Schiff when it comes to the Austro German canon. The Budapest born, British knighted pianist has spent decades making definitive recordings of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn and Mozart, often returning to the same repertoire years later with fresh ears. His live cycle of all 32 Beethoven sonatas, recorded at Zurich, stands as one of his most celebrated achievements, and between 2004 and 2006 he gave a much discussed series of lecture recitals on those same sonatas at London's Wigmore Hall. Schiff records for ECM, Decca and Teldec, a body of work spanning everything from Bach partitas and Goldberg Variations to the complete piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Bartók. He also formed his own chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, the name being a sly Italian translation of his own surname since both Barca and Schiff mean "boat". He conducts regularly with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and teaches as distinguished visiting professor at the Barenboim Said Akademie in Berlin.
