About
Angela Hewitt is the Canadian pianist who basically owns Bach on the modern piano. Her cycle of Bach keyboard recordings, completed between 1994 and 2005, covered all the major works and cemented her reputation as one of the most distinctive interpreters of that repertoire. The 2007 to 2008 season drove the point home, with complete performances of The Well Tempered Clavier in major cities worldwide, backed by a Hyperion DVD on Bach performance. Her 2014 recording of The Art of Fugue added another chapter to that legacy. Her range goes well beyond Bach, though. Her discography takes in Ravel, Debussy, Fauré, Schumann, Chopin, Scarlatti and more, all on Fazioli pianos, which she switched to in 2002. She also founded the Trasimeno Music Festival in Perugia in 2005 and still serves as its artistic director. The festival, like her recordings, reflects her taste for doing things properly and on her own terms.
