Few pianists alive can match Marc André Hamelin's combination of jaw dropping technical firepower and genuine intellectual curiosity. The Montreal born virtuoso has built his reputation partly by rescuing music that most performers won't go near: composers like Charles Valentin Alkan, Leopold Godowsky, and Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, whose works sit at the outer limits of what human hands can do. His recording of Godowsky's complete Studies on Chopin's Études landed the Gramophone Magazine Instrumental Award in 2000, and he has racked up 11 Grammy nominations along the way. Hamelin records for Hyperion, and his catalogue there spans everything from Haydn and Brahms to Leo Ornstein and Frederic Rzewski. He is also a composer himself, with his 12 Études in All the Minor Keys published by C. F. Peters and a recording on Hyperion. He even wrote pieces for player piano, including the gleefully absurd Circus Galop. A faculty member at the New England Conservatory, he plays regularly at venues like Wigmore Hall and the Herkulessaal in Munich, and holds the rank of Officer of the Order of Canada.
