About
Scottish pianist Steven Osborne has built one of the most distinctive recording careers in classical music through his long partnership with Hyperion Records, racking up Gramophone Awards and Schallplattenpreis prizes along the way. The disc that put him on the map internationally was his 2002 recording of Messiaen's vast Vingt regards sur l'enfant Jésus, a work so demanding it earned him comparisons to the finest interpreters of the piece. Before that breakthrough, he had already won the Clara Haskil and Naumburg piano competitions and been named a BBC New Generation Artist. His Hyperion catalogue ranges from Kapustin's jazz inflected preludes to Britten, Rachmaninoff, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev, and he has performed concertos with a remarkable spread of orchestras across Europe, Asia and the Americas. At the Edinburgh Festival he regularly appears as both soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with the likes of Christian Tetzlaff and Lisa Batiashvili. In 2014 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and he received an OBE in 2022 for services to music.
