Few pianists have stirred up classical music the way Ivo Pogorelić has. The Croatian pianist became genuinely famous not for a competition win but for being knocked out of the 1980 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, prompting juror Martha Argerich to resign in protest and declare him a genius. That scandal set the tone for a career built on bold, unorthodox interpretations that have won him devoted audiences while dividing critics sharply. Pogorelić has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon since 1982, building a wide catalogue covering composers from Bach and Scarlatti through to Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff. He has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others. After the death of his wife in 1996 he stepped back from concerts for over two decades, returning in 2019 with an album of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff sonatas. His playing tends toward extreme tempos and unconventional phrasing, which critics have called everything from visionary to distorted.
