About

Also known as: Chapin Carpenter, Mary, Mary-Chapin Carpenter

Mary Chapin Carpenter built her reputation playing clubs around Washington D.C. before landing a deal with Columbia Records in 1987, and what followed was one of the more consistent runs in country music. Her 1992 album Come On Come On went quadruple platinum in the United States, spinning off seven singles and cementing her as a genuine force in the genre. The follow up, Stones in the Road, won her the Grammy for Best Country Album, and her 1994 single "Shut Up and Kiss Me" hit number one on the country charts. All told, she has collected five Grammy Awards from 18 nominations, including four straight wins for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Her sound blends contemporary country with folk and americana, and a lot of her songs carry a distinctly feminist perspective. While she mostly writes her own material, often alongside longtime producer John Jennings, her catalogue also includes covers of Gene Vincent, Lucinda Williams, and Dire Straits. After leaving Columbia she moved to Zoë Records, then set up her own Lambent Light label distributed through Thirty Tigers, giving her full control over her work.
