About
Maryam Saleh is an Egyptian singer and songwriter whose sound ranges from psychedelic rock to trip hop, and who is just as comfortable on a stage or a film set as in a studio. She came up working in theatre, appearing in plays like Laila Soliman's Lessons in Revolution, and sang the title song for Ibrahim El Batout's 2008 film A Shams. In 2011 she played Mona Farkha in the short film A Tin Tale, shown as part of the Dubai International Film Festival. Musically, she started out around 2008 with Jawaz Safar, a stripped back project built on just oud and tabl. Her band Baraka dug into the songs of Sheikh Imam, a big influence on her, covering tracks like Nixon Baba. Since 2010 she has teamed up with Lebanese musician Zeid Hamdan, and their collaboration has been described as Arab trip hop.
