Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, or Masu Dore to their fans, is a Japanese trio from Kobe that mixes post hardcore and shoegaze into tightly arranged, guitar driven songs with melodic pop vocals. They are also known for a high energy live show. The band got its big break through an EMI Japan competition, which led to recording two tracks with American producer Dave Fridmann, the man behind records by The Flaming Lips and OK Go. Those tracks landed on their 2008 self titled EP. The road has not been smooth. Lineup changes whittled the group down to Natsuko Miyamoto alone, and in 2012 she called the band to a close. It came back in 2015 and has kept going since, releasing Naked Album in 2020, Awakening:Sleeping in 2022 on Flake Sounds, and a live album recorded in Japan in 2024. Their sound often gets compared to Number Girl, and they list Sugar, The Wedding Present and The Smashing Pumpkins among their influences.
