Matt Maltese has a knack for writing songs that feel simultaneously intimate and absurd, which is pretty much his signature. His 2017 single "As the World Caves In" imagined Theresa May and Donald Trump embarking on a doomed romance before triggering nuclear war, and after a TikTok resurgence in 2021 it went on to sell 200,000 equivalent units in the UK. That kind of sardonic wit, wrapped in chamber pop arrangements and indie rock guitars, runs through everything he does. Born to Canadian parents and raised in Reading, Maltese has put out five studio albums, a cover album and a string of EPs. His sophomore album Krystal was largely recorded and mixed by Maltese himself in a bedroom studio, while the third album Good Morning It's Now Tomorrow came out via Nettwerk in 2021. Driving Just to Drive followed in April 2023. His fifth album Hers arrived in May 2025, and he has also been collaborating with actor Bella Ramsey on new music. Away from his own records, he has written for artists including Birdy and runs his own label, Last Recordings On Earth.
