About

Also known as: Matthias Görne

Few baritones alive can claim the title "today's leading interpreter of German art songs", but the Chicago Tribune handed it to Matthias Goerne, and it's hard to argue. Born in Weimar, he has built a career that spans the grandest opera houses on earth, from the Royal Opera House and the Vienna State Opera to the Met, while keeping Lieder at the very centre of what he does. His carefully chosen operatic roles lean toward the weighty and psychologically demanding: Wagner's Wolfram and Amfortas, the title roles in Berg's Wozzeck and Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle, and Reimann's Lear. His marathon Goerne/Schubert Edition, twelve CDs for Harmonia Mundi recorded over several years and completed in 2014, earned top marks from BBC Music magazine and a Diapason d'Or. More recently he signed with Deutsche Grammophon for a Lieder trilogy with three different pianists, Jan Lisiecki, Seong Jin Cho and Daniil Trifonov, released across 2020, 2021 and 2022. He has a strong preference for working with solo concert pianists rather than accompanists, and it shows in the partnerships he keeps.
