Thomas Quasthoff is a German bass baritone whose voice can move between Bach cantatas, lieder and jazz with equal conviction, which is a rare combination in classical music. His career took off in 1988 when he won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, drawing praise from Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. From there he built a formidable discography on Deutsche Grammophon, picking up three Grammy Awards for Best Classical Vocal Performance along the way, with recordings alongside Anne Sofie von Otter, the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado, and the Berlin Baroque Soloists. His operatic appearances include Don Fernando in Beethoven's Fidelio at the Salzburg Festival and Amfortas in Parsifal with the Vienna State Opera. In 2007 he stepped into jazz territory with The Jazz Album: Watch What Happens, recorded with Till Brönner and a stellar band. After announcing his retirement in 2012, he returned to the stage and has since performed in concert and with his jazz quartet. He also teaches voice at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin and founded Das Lied, a biennial international song competition.
