About
Maudlin of the Well operate in a space where doom metal, death metal, gothic metal, chamber music, and ambient electronics all somehow coexist, and it works. The Boston band built their reputation on three albums released between 1999 and 2001, with Bath and Leaving Your Body Map designed as companion pieces. Their whole creative process had an unusual philosophy behind it: the core trio of Jason Byron, Greg Massi, and Toby Driver claimed to literally bring music back from the astral plane through lucid dreaming and astral projection, which tells you plenty about the atmosphere they were chasing. The band dissolved in 2003 when they effectively transformed into Kayo Dot, but fan donations pulled them back together for Part the Second in 2009, a free download that kept their signature ethereal mood while dialing back the death growls. Finnish label Blood Music later pressed it on CD in 2012, and a reunion show in 2015 at The Stone in New York City reminded people why this group still matters to anyone who likes their metal genuinely strange.
