With over 20 million records sold worldwide, Mecano remains the best selling Spanish band of all time, a title no one has managed to take from them since they called it a day in 1992. The Madrid trio, singer Ana Torroja and brothers Nacho and José María Cano, started out as a pure synthpop act heavily influenced by English new wave, then gradually opened up their sound to absorb everything from bossa nova and flamenco to reggae and tango. That range showed up in their biggest hits: the darkly dramatic "Hijo de la Luna", the lesbian love story "Mujer contra mujer" which spent seven consecutive weeks at number one in France, and the Metropolis inspired "El 7 de septiembre". Their music even outlived the band itself, with the stage musical Hoy no me puedo levantar drawing more than 1.5 million spectators across Spain and Mexico, making it the most successful original Spanish language production ever.
