About
Mehmet Polat Quartet is built around the oud player and composer Mehmet Polat, who pairs his instrument with piano, double bass and drums. The result is jazz that borrows freely from Eastern European, Asian, Balkan and Mediterranean traditions, without settling into any single one of them. The mood tends to be contemplative and emotional, but the rhythms underneath are anything but simple. The sound rests on a deep, solid pulse from the bass and drums, while oud and piano trade floating melodic lines above it. Polat is joined by pianist Franz von Chossy, drummer Jeroen Batterink and bassist Daniel van Huffelen. Each of them brings a distinct voice, and together they play compositions shaped by experimentation and plain curiosity, music that doesn't care much about genre borders or maps.
