Melissa Etheridge built her reputation the hard way, playing lesbian bars around Los Angeles and grinding through years of club gigs before her stripped down self titled debut landed in 1988. That record cracked the Billboard 200 and got her a Grammy nomination for "Bring Me Some Water", but it was 1993's Yes I Am that really changed everything. Three Top 40 hits, a second Grammy for "Come to My Window", six times platinum, and 138 weeks on the charts. Her sound sits at the crossroads of confessional songwriting, folk rooted rock, and those distinctively raspy, smoky vocals. She kept the momentum going through the late nineties and early 2000s with Breakdown, Skin, and Lucky. Then in October 2004 came a breast cancer diagnosis, and her return to the 2005 Grammy stage, performing a Janis Joplin tribute while bald from chemotherapy, became one of the most talked about moments in the show's history. She has since released 17 studio albums in total, picked up an Academy Award for the An Inconvenient Truth song "I Need to Wake Up", earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and remained one of rock's most outspoken LGBTQ activists.
