Michael Mayer is one of the key figures behind Kompakt, the Cologne label that helped define the sound of minimal techno and microhouse in the early 2000s. Alongside Wolfgang and Reinhardt Voigt, he helped build Kompakt into one of electronic music's most influential imprints, and his own productions have been a core part of its catalogue ever since. His 2004 debut album Touch set a benchmark for the label's sound, and he has kept releasing records at a steady pace, with The Floor Is Lava arriving in 2024. As a DJ and remixer, Mayer has a resume that stretches from Kompakt's own Speicher series to a Fabric mix and remixes for Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys. That range says a lot about how his ear works: rooted in minimal techno but never boxed in by it. The Immer mix series, now three volumes deep, remains a go to document of the Kompakt sound.
