About

Also known as: Michael H. McDonald, Michael Mc Donald, Mike McDonald

Few voices are as instantly recognizable as Michael McDonald's, that warm, raspy baritone that somehow sounds like a foghorn made of velvet. He first made his mark as a backing vocalist for Steely Dan before joining the Doobie Brothers in 1975, initially just filling in for an ailing Tom Johnston and then sticking around to reshape the band's entire sound. Songs like "What a Fool Believes" and "Minute by Minute" became defining hits, and "What a Fool Believes" earned him a Grammy for Song of the Year alongside co writer Kenny Loggins. His solo work has been just as varied. The 1982 single "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" found a whole new audience in 1994 when Warren G and Nate Dogg sampled it on "Regulate". He co wrote Van Halen's "I'll Wait", duetted with James Ingram on the Grammy winning "Yah Mo B There", and has lent his voice to records by Toto, Christopher Cross, Aretha Franklin and Thundercat, among others. Five Grammy Awards and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction as a Doobie Brother in 2020 round out a career that refuses to stay in one lane.
