About

Also known as: Michel Charles Sardou

Few French artists have stirred as much debate as Michel Sardou, and that tension between heartfelt romance and pointed provocation is exactly what makes him compelling. Born in Paris, he built a catalog that swings between sweeping love songs like 'La maladie d'amour' and 'Je vais t'aimer' and bracingly controversial numbers on colonialism, the death penalty, and clerical celibacy. His 1981 single 'Les lacs du Connemara' became an international hit, particularly in the Netherlands, and remains one of his most recognizable tracks. With over 350 recorded songs, 25 studio albums and more than 100 million records sold, Sardou is one of the heavyweights of chanson française and variété française. His 2004 album Du plaisir debuted straight at number one on the French charts, and he sold out eighteen consecutive nights at the Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy in 2001. Many of his biggest songs came out of collaborations with composers Jacques Revaux and Pierre Delanoë, with a handful co written with Italian singer Toto Cutugno.
