Midlake

Midlake started out as a jazz collective at the University of North Texas before gradually shifting into the folk and indie rock territory they became known for. Their 2006 album The Trials of Van Occupanther drew heavy comparisons to Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac and helped build a real following in Europe, where they signed to Bella Union Records and played major festivals. The Courage of Others followed in 2010, a slower and denser record leaning into British prog folk acts like Pentangle and Fairport Convention. Things shifted significantly in 2012 when founding vocalist and primary songwriter Tim Smith left mid recording. Guitarist Eric Pulido stepped up to lead the band, and rather than shelving the sessions, they started over and released Antiphon in 2013. More recently, the band put out official music videos for tracks like Bethel Woods and Meanwhile, and in 2025 dropped a video for Days Gone By, showing Midlake still very much active.
