About

Midori's career has a few moments that sound made up. At 11, she walked on as a surprise soloist with the New York Philharmonic. At 14, she was playing Bernstein's Serenade at Tanglewood with Bernstein himself conducting when she snapped an E string, borrowed the concertmaster's Stradivarius, snapped that one too, and finished on a third violin. The New York Times put it on the front page: "Girl, 14, Conquers Tanglewood with 3 Violins." The Osaka born violinist went on to play with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and Boston Symphony, under conductors like Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons and Andris Nelsons. Away from the stage she founded Midori and Friends to bring music education to kids in New York and Japan, and became a UN Messenger of Peace in 2007. She also teaches, holding posts at USC's Thornton School and the Curtis Institute.
