About
Madeline Johnston makes music under the name Midwife, working as a self taught multi instrumentalist and recording engineer based in southern Colorado. The project started in 2014 while she was a resident at Rhinoceropolis, a beloved DIY space in Denver, and she spent well over a decade refining her sound there. She calls what she does "Heaven Metal": emotionally charged music about destruction and processing grief. Loss and mourning, in all their different shapes, sit at the heart of her songwriting. On record she builds dense, lush sonic environments somewhere in her own corner of heavy music, while live she strips things back, letting the emotional weight do the work and hushing rooms to silence.
