About
Also known as: M1ke + the Mechan1c5, Mike & the Mecanics, Mike & the Mechanics, Mike and the Mechanics
Mike and the Mechanics grew out of Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford's desire to collaborate beyond the confines of his main band, and the results were immediate: their 1985 debut delivered three US Top 40 hits, including two in the Top 10 with "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" and "All I Need Is a Miracle". The band leaned on a rotating cast of vocalists and session players, much like Steely Dan or the Alan Parsons Project, with Paul Carrack and Paul Young sharing lead vocal duties. Their peak came with "The Living Years" in 1988, a US number one co written by Rutherford and B.A. Robertson after both had lost their fathers, and sung by Carrack with his own personal connection to the grief in the lyrics. The band navigated lineup changes throughout the 1990s and dissolved in 2004, but Rutherford revived the Mechanics in 2010 with vocalists Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar stepping in for a new era.
