About

Also known as: Mikhail Pletnev, Mikhail Pletnyov, Mikhail Vasil'evič Pletnëv, Mikhail Vasilevich Pletnev, Mikhaïl Pletnev, Михаил Васильевич Плетнёв

Few pianists can claim to have founded a major orchestra, but Mikhail Pletnev did exactly that. After winning the Gold Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978, he built a reputation as one of Russia's finest pianists before turning his attention to conducting. In 1990 he founded the Russian National Orchestra, the first non government supported orchestra in Russia since 1917, with backing he secured through a friendship with Mikhail Gorbachev. Pletnev is a prolific recording artist whose catalogue spans piano, conducting and composition. He has recorded extensively for Deutsche Grammophon and Pentatone, with a focus on Russian repertoire, particularly Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, though he also took on the complete Beethoven symphonies in 2007. He cites Rachmaninoff as a defining influence. On top of performing and conducting, he composes, with works ranging from a Piano Quintet and a Viola Concerto to a Jazz Suite, showing a range that goes well beyond the concert hall mainstream.
