About
Also known as: Mor ve Otesi
Few Turkish rock bands can claim they shifted how an entire industry hears a genre, but Mor ve Ötesi pulled that off with their 2004 album Dünya Yalan Söylüyor, which sold over 300,000 copies and brought alternative rock to a mainstream Turkish audience that had largely ignored it. The Istanbul quartet blends rock with Anatolian influences, and their lyrics have never shied away from political territory, taking sharp aim at social issues and the personal struggles of the band members alike. Their fifth album Büyük Düşler was named Best Album of the Year by Rolling Stone Turkey and marked a deliberate return to the darker, heavier sound their original fanbase loved. In 2008 they represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade with the song Deli, finishing seventh with 138 points and earning a memorable comparison from BBC commentator Terry Wogan, who called the lead singer a sinister James Bond. After nine studio albums spanning nearly three decades, Mor ve Ötesi remain one of the most consistent and creatively restless acts in Turkish rock, with their 2022 album Sirenler and a concert film from Vodafone Park showing no sign of slowing down.
