About
Also known as: Freiheit, Müchner Freiheit, Münchner Freiheit
Named after a square in Munich, Münchener Freiheit built their reputation as one of the defining acts of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement before pivoting to polished, radio friendly pop in both German and English. Their 1986 album Von Anfang an was the turning point, driven by the hits "Ohne dich (schlaf ich heut Nacht nicht ein)" and "Tausendmal du", and the band followed that momentum by recording English language versions of their biggest tracks for European markets. That move paid off in Greece, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands, where the records performed strongly. In the UK they are remembered as a one hit wonder, thanks to "Keeping the Dream Alive" reaching number 14 in December 1988. Back in Germany they stayed busy across decades of lineup shifts and label changes, even representing the country at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 with "Viel zu weit". By 2016 they had nineteen studio albums to their name, and four of those went gold.
