Formed in Berlin in 1969 by Stephan Kaske, a multi instrumentalist who played everything from sitar to synthesizer, Mythos carved out a corner of the early krautrock and space rock world with a debut album soaked in Pink Floyd and Hawkwind influences, built around science fiction and ecological themes. That first self titled record from 1972 even landed them support slots with Family, Colosseum and Humble Pie. Through a series of lineup changes and splits, Kaske kept the name alive, recording film and TV soundtracks and the moody 1975 release DreamLab before expanding to a full band again and shifting toward a heavier sound on Strange Guys and Concrete City. Kaske eventually stepped back to focus on his own Berlin studio, while former bandmates Sven Dohrow and Ronnie Schreinzer went on to form The Twins and found success in synthpop. But Mythos kept going as a vehicle for Kaske's ideas, with releases stretching well into the 2010s, touching on electronic soundscapes, Edgar Allan Poe adaptations and even a Jules Verne tribute.
