Trombonist and composer Nabou Claerhout leads the Antwerp based quartet N∆BOU, a group that takes rhythm rather than melody as its usual starting point. That choice gives their music a restless, layered quality that somehow stays approachable. The lineup is tight: Trui Amerlinck on double bass providing a warm foundation, Gijs Idema on electric guitar adding colour and subtle edge, and Daniel Jonkers on drums bringing an instinctive, almost primal energy. Above it all, Claerhout's trombone floats, whispers and narrates. The band has released two praised albums, with the third, Indigo, building on that foundation with a richer and more emotionally direct sound. Outside N∆BOU, Claerhout has collaborated with musicians including Jamie Peet and Reinier Baas, and plays in ensembles such as Brainteaser Orchestra and the Kika Sprangers Large Ensemble. Fans of Portico Quartet, Gogo Penguin or Mammal Hands will feel right at home.
