About
Naamu is the band of bassist and composer Teun Creemers from Arnhem, and the whole idea is to let jazz rub up against musical traditions from elsewhere. Their self titled debut album from 2023 drew good reviews in Songlines and Jazzism and earned an Edison Award nomination in the Global category. The band has already worked with West African musicians Kankou Kouyaté and Harouna Samaké, and later turned toward southern Morocco, teaming up with vocalist and multi instrumentalist Aziz Ozouss. He is rooted in Amazigh music and plays the ribab and the lothar. Together they blend trance like gnawa rhythms and Amazigh melody and poetry with adventurous jazz, aiming for a sound of its own rather than straight jazz or gnawa. Creemers plays bass guitar and guimbri, alongside guitarist Jelle Roozenburg and drummer Tuur Moens.
