Few debut albums carry the weight that Illmatic does. When Nas dropped it in 1994, it immediately set a benchmark for lyricism in hip hop that critics still measure everything else against. His dense, street level storytelling, rooted in the Queensbridge housing projects of Queens, New York, drew on boom bap production from heavyweights like DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Q Tip to create something that felt both hyper local and universal. His follow up It Was Written pushed toward a more commercial sound, scoring hits like If I Ruled the World with Lauryn Hill, but Nas pulled back toward his roots with Stillmatic in 2001. Across thirteen studio albums he has stayed one of the most technically sharp MCs in the game, known for intricate rhyme schemes and vivid narratives. Tracks like N.Y. State of Mind, Nas Is Like, and I Can remain touchstones of east coast hip hop.
