Nathan Evans turned a TikTok sea shanty habit into a genuine chart career. The Scottish folk and pop singer from Airdrie went viral in late 2020 with his version of "Wellerman", a New Zealand folk song that inspired duets and remixes from the likes of Brian May, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jimmy Fallon. Signed to Polydor in January 2021, the official release shot to number one in the UK and several other countries, kicking off a run that led to his debut album Wellerman, The Album in 2022. His second album, 1994, released in November 2024, showed a clear artistic shift: folk instrumentation woven through contemporary pop production, with Evans stepping up as a Scottish singer songwriter rather than just a shanty specialist. It debuted at number one on the Scottish Albums Chart, and the single "Heather on the Hill" earned a Silver certification from the BPI. More recently, he teamed up with Saint Phnx on a collaborative album called Angels' Share.
