Few guitarists move as freely between worlds as Nels Cline. The Los Angeles native has been the lead guitarist for Wilco since 2004, but that role sits alongside a sprawling career in avant garde jazz, free improvisation, and experimental rock that spans well over 150 albums. Rolling Stone ranked him the 82nd greatest guitarist of all time in 2011, and his work covers territory from punk and alternative rock with the Geraldine Fibbers and Carla Bozulich to noise collaborations with Thurston Moore and Mike Watt. Cline leads several of his own projects, including the Nels Cline Singers, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline 4, and his solo discography includes records on Blue Note like Lovers and Currents, Constellations. Most recently, the Consentrik Quartet arrived in 2025. His playing resists easy categorisation, pulling jazz, rock, and pure noise into something that feels like its own genre entirely.
