Neun Welten, which translates as Nine Worlds and draws its name from Norse mythology, is a German folk group from Halle and Leipzig whose sound sits somewhere between instrumental acoustic music, traditional folk and dark folk. What sets them apart is a strong focus on acoustic orchestration, weaving together dreamy, sometimes playful melodies with classical elements and a persistent undercurrent of melancholy. The lineup brings together recorders, violin, acoustic guitars, cello, clarinet, jaw harp and percussion, giving the music a genuinely textured, chamber like quality. They earned a nomination for the German Folk Award RUTH in the Newcomer category back in 2005, and have shared stages on tour with Finnish act Tenhi as well as Dornenreich and Elane. Their track Pan appeared on Prophecy Productions' well regarded compilation Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings in 2010. Since 2018 the band has been joined by Italian bassist Giacomo Astorri, who also works as a concert and event photographer when he is not playing.
