Based in Den Haag, New European Ensemble is a chamber ensemble with a strong affinity for contemporary and spiritually charged music. They are closely associated with the work of Sofia Goebaidoelina, whose radically expressive sound world and poetic mysticism sit comfortably in their hands. Their programmes tend to reach toward the ecstatic and the visionary, drawing on composers such as Julius Eastman and Salvatore Sciarrino alongside newer commissions, including a oboe concerto by Michael Hersch. Sciarrino's rare chamber opera Infinito nero is among the works they have brought to the stage, often alongside striking vocal soloists. The ensemble has a reputation for digging into music that demands real commitment, both technically and emotionally, and their concert programmes reflect a genuine curatorial intelligence rather than a safe survey of the contemporary canon.
