About

Also known as: Newmodel Army

New Model Army have been rattling cages since 1980, when Justin Sullivan formed the band in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Sullivan is the only constant presence across more than four decades of shifting lineups, and his lyrics, which swing from blunt political anger to spiritual searching to the deeply personal, have always been as central to the band's appeal as the music itself. They took their name from the Parliamentarian army of 1645, which tells you something about where Sullivan's head is at. The band hit Number 1 on the UK indie chart in 1984 with their debut album Vengeance, outpushing the Smiths, then signed to EMI and broke into the mainstream top 30 with No Rest for the Wicked in 1985. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s they kept shifting shape, moving from punk roots toward folk rock on the widely loved Thunder and Consolation, then lurching into hard rock on 1993's The Love of Hopeless Causes, a record that literally came packaged with nuclear weapon construction instructions. Genre labels have never really stuck to them, which is probably the point.
