NewJeans built their reputation fast. The Seoul based girl group dropped their debut single "Attention" in July 2022 without a shred of prior promotion, a bold move that Billboard called "risky but ultimately invigorating". Their sound pulls heavily from the 1990s and 2000s, giving them a distinct feel among K pop acts. "Hype Boy" went on to become the longest running song on the Billboard Global 200 by a K pop female act, and "Ditto" claimed the top spot on the Circle Digital Chart longer than any other song in the chart's history. Their second EP Get Up hit number one on the US Billboard 200 and sold over a million copies in South Korea. IFPI ranked them the eighth best selling artist worldwide in 2023. The group's run has not been without turbulence though: a contract dispute with Hybe led to a hiatus in early 2025, and the lineup has since shifted, with Danielle's contract terminated and remaining members gradually returning to ADOR.
