About

Also known as: Lowe, Lowe, Nick, Nicholas Drain Lowe

Nick Lowe has always been better at giving hits away than keeping them for himself. He wrote "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" for Elvis Costello, produced the Damned's debut, and helped bankroll the entire Stiff Records operation with a £400 loan from Dr. Feelgood's Lee Brilleaux. As a solo artist he did land a genuine worldwide smash with "Cruel to Be Kind" in 1979, which hit No. 12 in four separate countries, and "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" gave him a top 10 UK hit the year before. For much of the 1980s he toured and recorded as part of Rockpile alongside Dave Edmunds, a partnership so tangled by label politics that the duo only ever put out one official joint album. Later in his career Lowe made a deliberate turn away from ironic pop toward something quieter and rootsier, drawing on vintage country, soul and R&B. Rock critic Jim Farber summed it up well, calling him a worldly balladeer specialising in grave vocals and graceful tunes.
