About
Also known as: Nickelcreek, Nickle Creek
Nickel Creek started as a bluegrass kids' act and ended up winning a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The trio of Chris Thile on mandolin and siblings Sara and Sean Watkins on fiddle and guitar broke through in 2000 with a platinum self titled album produced by Alison Krauss. TIME even named them one of its Five Music Innovators of the Millennium that year. They later played backup for Dolly Parton at the 2001 Grammy Awards. Their 2002 record This Side stretched the sound well beyond bluegrass, folding in indie rock and folk rock and covering Pavement's Spit on a Stranger along the way. It peaked at No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart. After Why Should the Fire Die? in 2005 and a long Farewell (For Now) Tour, they went on indefinite hiatus, then reunited in 2014 with the album A Dotted Line, produced by Eric Valentine.
