About

Also known as: Nicolas Alstaedt

Nicolas Altstaedt plays a 1749 G.B. Guadagnini cello, and the instrument suits his range well: he moves easily between solo concertos, chamber music, and the podium as a conductor. He broke through internationally when he won the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award in 2010, leading to a debut with the Vienna Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel at the Lucerne Festival, where he performed Schumann's Cello Concerto. Since then he has worked with orchestras from the London Philharmonic to the NHK Symphony, and with conductors including Esa Pekka Salonen, Roger Norrington, and Lahav Shani. Altstaedt has a strong pull toward new music, premiering works by Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Widmann, Matthias Pintscher, and others. His recording of C.P.E. Bach Cello Concertos with Arcangelo on Hyperion won the BBC Music Magazine Concerto Award 2017, and his recital disc Four Cities with pianist Fazıl Say picked up the Edison Klassiek the same year. He also took over from Gidon Kremer as artistic director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival in 2012, and from Adam Fischer as artistic director of the Haydn Philharmonie in 2014.
