Truls Mørk is a Norwegian cellist from Bergen whose playing draws comparisons to Mstislav Rostropovich, the legendary soloist for whom Shostakovich wrote his First Cello Concerto. That is serious company to keep, and the comparison rests on something specific: Mørk draws a similarly primal, raw tone from the instrument, the kind of sound that goes straight to the gut rather than simply dazzling the ear. Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto is perhaps the most celebrated work for the instrument written in the twentieth century, and Mørk is considered one of its most compelling interpreters.
