Few Indonesian bands have the kind of crossover reach that Nidji has built since forming in Jakarta in 2002. Named after the Japanese word for rainbow, the six piece draws on Coldplay and The Killers as touchstones, landing somewhere in the zone of alternative pop and rock with enough melodic punch to break beyond their home market. Their songs "Heaven" and "Shadows" were picked up as background music for Southeast Asian promos of the TV series Heroes, and they scored the beloved Indonesian film Laskar Pelangi, which put them on a much larger map. Their 2012 track "Liberty Victory" was even adopted as an anthem by Manchester United. After longtime vocalist Giring Ganesha stepped away in 2017 to pursue a political career, the band ran a nationwide audition drawing around 2,000 hopefuls before landing on Yusuf Ubay, a former Indonesian Idol contestant, as his replacement in early 2019.
