Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch has led his self described zen funk combo RONIN since 2001. The tag "the scientist of groove" follows him around for good reason: his approach to rhythm and pattern is genuinely systematic, shaped in part by time he spent in Japan studying aikido and Zen meditation. Those disciplines fed directly into what he calls ritual groove music, a style built on reduction, repetition and a physical relationship with rhythm, with the whole group locked together like a single organism. Bärtsch composes in numbered modules, pieces where patterns and cycles stack up layer by layer into something hypnotic. The band moves from tightly constructed minimal music into full on funk peaks within the same piece. RONIN's lineup includes Sha on bass clarinet and alto saxophone, drummer Kaspar Rast, and bassist Jeremias Keller, who joined in 2020. The album Spin brings together new modules alongside reworked versions of earlier pieces.
