About
Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen has built a quietly devoted global following through music that sits somewhere between jazz, meditation, and Nordic folk sensibility. His trio recordings for ECM between 2003 and 2007 sold over 100,000 copies combined, no small feat for instrumental jazz, and earned a Nattjazz prize in 2005. The music was described as rapt, pristine, and meditative, and that reputation has stuck. Over the years Gustavsen has expanded beyond the trio format, working with saxophonist Tore Brunborg and drummer Jarle Vespestad in various ensemble configurations. The ensemble album Restored, Returned won the Spellemannsprisen, Norway's equivalent of a Grammy. Later quartet work pushed things in a more dynamic, edgier direction. He has also teamed up with German Afghan singer Simin Tander for the album What Was Said, and collaborated across the years with vocalists Silje Nergaard, Solveig Slettahjell and Siri Gjære. His trio has kept releasing records into the 2020s, most recently Seeing in 2024.
