About
Also known as: Nilufer, Nilüfer Yumlu
Nilüfer, born Nilüfer Yumlu, has been one of Turkey's most recognizable pop voices since the late 1970s, blending Turkish pop with touches of arabesk and Anatolian rock across a career that spans decades. She represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1978 alongside the band Nazar, and went on to rack up a string of beloved hits including "Show Yapma", "Kar Taneleri", "Mor Menekşe" and "Mavilim". Her voice and style evolved steadily through the 1980s and 1990s, making her a consistent presence on Turkish radio and television. Off stage, Nilüfer has carried real weight as Turkey's National Ambassador to UNICEF since 1997, and in 1998 she received the honorary title of State Artist of Turkey. She also fought through breast cancer, completing a nine month treatment. Songs like "Dünya Dönüyor" and "Eğrisi Doğrusu" remain fan favourites, and she has continued recording collaborations well into the 2010s.
