Nina Hagen earned the title "Godmother of German Punk" through sheer force of personality and a vocal range that few could match. Trained in classical opera, she bent that foundation into something far wilder, mixing punk aggression with theatrical extremes that made her impossible to ignore. Her 1978 debut with the Nina Hagen Band sold over 250,000 copies and announced her as a genuine force in both the German punk and Neue Deutsche Welle scenes. Going solo in the early 1980s, she pushed things even further with NunSexMonkRock, the record that first got her onto US charts, followed by Fearless and Nina Hagen in Ekstasy. She kept shifting through the 1990s, working with Mercury Records on three albums including Street and Revolution Ballroom, and resurfaced in strong form with Return of the Mother in 2000. Away from music, she has worked extensively as a voice actress and written three autobiographies, while staying vocal on human and animal rights issues.
