About
Also known as: نياز
Niyaz blends Sufi mysticism with trance electronica in a way that feels genuinely transportive, drawing on Persian, Indian and Mediterranean folk traditions and weaving in the poetry of Rumi alongside lesser known Sufi voices like Obeyd e Zakani and Amir Khusrow. The Montreal based duo grew out of a collaboration between vocalist and hammered dulcimer player Azam Ali and her husband Loga Ramin Torkian, with producer Carmen Rizzo shaping their sound until his departure in 2013. Their name means "yearning" in Persian, which pretty much says it all. Their self titled debut from 2005 set the tone with 13th century Sufi and Urdu poetry laid over swirling hypnotic beats. Nine Heavens followed in 2008 with a smart twist, pairing a full electronic album with an acoustic disc of the same tracks. Their third album Sumud pushed their lyrical range further, incorporating Turkish, Palestinian Arabic and Kurdish alongside Persian. The discography rounds out with The Fourth Light in 2015.
